Dodge Hornet R/T's Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain Earns Spot on Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems for 2023

The powertrain behind the 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T, Dodge's debut into electrified performance vehicles, has received critical acclaim, securing its place on the Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems list for 2023. This marks the seventh consecutive year that a product from Stellantis, Dodge's parent company, has been honored by this prestigious award.

Engineered for versatility, the awarded powertrain couples a 1.3-liter turbocharged inline-four engine with dual electric motors. This assembly generates a substantial 288 horsepower and a torque of 383 lb-ft. A 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack extends its capabilities, allowing for over 53 km of purely electric travel. One of the standout features is the Hornet R/T’s PowerShot—a performance enhancer delivering an additional 30 horsepower for 15-second intervals. This not only trims 1.5 seconds from the standard 0 to 60 mph sprint but also places the Hornet R/T as the quickest and most powerful vehicle in its category.

Bob Gritzinger, Editor-in-Chief at WardsAuto, described the powertrain as highly adaptable, saying it’s "quick when you want it, mellow when you’re just cruising.” Meanwhile, Micky Bly, Stellantis' Head of Global Propulsion Systems, highlighted that this innovation exemplifies Stellantis' dedication to both performance and sustainability.

The recognition of the Hornet R/T’s powertrain contributes to Stellantis' broader commitment to environmental sustainability, outlined in their Dare Forward 2030 plan. It aims to halve the company’s global carbon footprint by 2030, working towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2038.

This accolade builds upon Stellantis’ previous wins, including last year's dual victory for the 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 plug-in hybrid in the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe, and the Hurricane Twin Turbo I-6 in the Grand Wagoneer. Over the last three decades, Stellantis has accounted for 23 Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems awards, affirming its leadership and innovation in the automotive industry.
